Signs My Car’s Exhaust System Is Clogged

A clogged exhaust system can cause all kinds of problems for your car, truck, or C/SUV. A leaking exhaust system can cause many of the same problems. Auto Service Kingston is going to list the signs that the exhaust system is clogged or leaking in your automobile. Bring your vehicle to our shop right away so we can inspect the exhaust system and repair it.

Burning Plastic Odors

Burning plastic odors coming from the engine are a sign that the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking. When the gasket is cracked, hot exhaust escapes out of it and melts nearby plastic auto parts. It can also melt nearby rubber parts.

Damaged Tailpipe

The tailpipe can get clogged or otherwise damaged by road debris or the road itself. A clogged tailpipe will send exhaust back into the combustion chamber. A damaged tailpipe will be dented, hanging too low, or have holes in it.
Faulty Catalytic Converter
When the catalytic converter gets clogged by exhaust hydrocarbon deposits it starts to malfunction. A faulty catalytic converter will release rotten egg odors in your vehicle’s exhaust and generate excessive heat under your car.

Gasoline/Diesel Odors

You may smell the odors of gasoline or diesel fuel inside the passenger cabin of your automobile if the exhaust system is clogged. These odors can also be a sign that your exhaust system is leaking. Inhaling these odors is dangerous, so don’t drive your automobile.

Overly Noisy Engine

An overly noisy engine is a sign that the exhaust system is leaking. Specifically, the muffler is leaking because it has a hole in it. You need to replace the muffler as soon as possible to avoid getting ticketed for an engine that is too loud.

Performance Problems

You will notice that your vehicle has engine performance problems if the exhaust system is clogged. Problems can also occur with a leaking exhaust system. Specifically, your engine will sputter and struggle to run and your acceleration will lag.

Poor Fuel Economy

To rub salt in the wound, the engine performance problems will cause a significant reduction in your automobile’s fuel economy. This is because the engine will burn through more fuel as it struggles to produce the power it needs to run.
